What's in the pipe?
After six months of training at Practica, let's focus for this time on fonts in the making.
Hi everyone,
I hope you are all ok :) Here we are still waiting for some kind of sunny spring. I think we will go straight to summer, but after a few days of sunny and warm weather, I wonder if this was not summer… Well whatever season it is, the weather is grey and it really does not help my mental health…
Today, I would like to take the time to make a quick tour of what is in the pipe on the fonts side. Long time I did not publish anything about them, so let’s see what could come out and when.
Note: All Paid members will receive next week the font files of all these fonts, at the state they are right now. This is a privilege to be a paid member, you get access to all WIP font, but also to a commercial licence when the font is publicly out! So if it does interest you, please consider checking out the membership page: membership starts at 4,17€:
1. Blygge
I had to start this post with the font I worked on at Practica for 6 intensive months! First of all, if you want to learn SERIOUSLY type design with two great teachers and live twice a week, also for a cheap price, please consider Practica. This was an incredible experience and even if I had some knowledge before doing it, I learnt A LOT!
So for 6 months I decided to take advantage of the program to go totally out of my confort zone and design a Sans Serif font. It’s called Blygge. Right now the Black version is almost done, same for thin style and I am working on interpolating to get all together 7 styles, from thin to black.
Here are some screenshots of the font where it is now. It is still WIP so please be indulgent on the outcome :)
Right now, I really don’t know when it will be ready. Probably around the end of the year. So I will keep you posted.
2. BBQ
I started this project some time ago but this is the one I am going to focus on right now because I would like to launch it in June, if possible. Here is a screenshot of BBQ:
Kerning is not done, spacing has to be refined, I have to do numbers, diacritics and punctuation. I think I will launch a simple version first and will update it later with more languages.
3. Wooody
Wooody was first a fun exercise on Fontself for iPad for me and the more I looked at it and the more I thought it could be something more than just a fun exercise. So now I plan to refine it, do numbers, diacritics and punctuation and launch it around fall this year.
4. Vaccaciones
Again started with Fontself, this font was created in partnership with them for a specific project that did not see the light, so with their consent I decided to continue to work on it and make something I could publish. I also started working on some ligatures for this one. No release date yet, There is still a lot to do so it will probably be released in 2025.
5. Basta!
Another font (again!) that started as an experiment on Fontself for the iPad. This is typically what I like to do and I thought that Scusi was maybe not readable enough to be used in a big project, so I started designing Basta! with the same idea, the same inspiration and the same goal :) No release time here too, probably end of the year :)
Which one do you prefer and which one would you like to use? Please don’t hesitate to share your thoughts in the comments section :)
Project of the week!
This week there won’t be any visual inspiration but I would like to share with you a great project from my friend Elliot Jay Stocks, which is a book about about Type Specimen. And I am sure this book could be a great ressource and inspiration for you. As usual with Elliot, the design will be fantastic, the content, coming from many many great foundries (Some of my fonts will be included too!!) will be outstanding and also, and I think it is important to mention it in these days where everything is so expensive, the book is really affordable.
It is in the crowdfunding phase yet, so please, support Elliot and back his project. You can believe me, this will be a great collector for your bookshelf and a permanent inspiration guide for great fonts.
This is it for today!! Enjoy your weekend, go play outside and talk to you next week :)
Take care,
Francis
Ouahou ! Incroyables toutes ces nouvelles fonts 🤩 Coup de cœur perso pour BBQ. Quel boulot 🔥
Your new fonts are all so playful, Francis! I love BBQ for its horizontal counters and high contrast characters.
